going to the match (1953) L.S. Lowry painting.

L.S. Lowry (1887-1976) gained widespread public recognition for his paintings of everyday life in the industrial districts around Salford in Manchester. Working full-time as a rent collector, his day job allowed him to witness the ‘everyday lives’ of people living in the city.

Although living very south of Salford, Lowry’s painting: ‘Going to the Match’ (1953) remains today a personal favourite as it always reminds me of going to watch my local team on a Saturday afternoon in the late 1980’s.
